Old Master Paintings - Auction 26 March 2010 Highlights
One of the highlights of the Old Master paintings auction is a small gem by 17th-century Dutch artist Abraham Mignon (lot 3033). The painting, a still life with fruit and flowers dating from the end of Mignon‘s short life, circa 1675, was only known to experts through a black-and-white photo until it was recently rediscovered in a Swiss collection. In remarkable condition, it is certain to create a sensation among aficionados of Mignon‘s work. A 16th-century landscape with St Hubert (lot 3018) is in the tradition of the great Flemish landscape artist Joachim Patinir (ca. 1480-1524). Patinir was among the first painters to make the landscape the main subject of his paintings, and this revolutionary development influenced generations of artists. The influence of Albrecht Dürer can also be detected in this stunning painting, which falls into the category of so-called „world landscapes“: rather then depicting an existing landscape, it represents the general beauty of nature in an idealized form. Also from the 16th century, a large allegorical composition by Francesco Bassano the Younger (lot 3026) combines the natural and supernatural: a richly illustrated scene from everyday life of the period crowned by an allegorical figure representing the wind. Other Old Master highlights include a pair of so-called “capriccio” views of imaginary cities with elaborate architectural elements by the 18th-century Venetian master Michele Marieschi (lot 3065), and a view of the Canale Grande in Venice by Marieschi‘s famous nephew, Francesco Guardi (lot 3062).

The Régence lacquer cabinet (lot 1050) featured in Koller‘s fine furniture auction this March is as much a work of art as a fine example of early 18th century cabinetmaking. Painted on all surfaces with exquisite floral still lifes, this extremely rare cabinet on stand epitomizes the highest quality among painted furniture in Holland and England of this period. A “bureau Mazarin” from the circle of the celebrated French cabinetmaker Pierre Gole (lot 1080) is remarkable for its extremely fine floral and foliate marquetry as well as its elegant and unusual herm scrolling legs. Gole, the leading cabinetmaker of the first half of Louis XIV‘s reign, is famous for the invention of this particular form of desk, named after Cardinal Mazarin, the effective ruler of France during the later period of the young Louis‘ regency, and his floral marquetry is equal to the finest still lifes painted by Dutch artists of the same period. Another exceptional Louis XIV period piece is the console table “Aux têtes de Romains” (lot 1082). Inspired by sketches by Daniel Marot. This piece nicely illustrates the cultural and artistic exchanges between the Netherlands and France during the second half of the 17th century. While France was the absolute focal point for culture and what we would call today “lifestyle” during Louis XIV‘s reign, many of the artisans who created these masterpieces were of Dutch origin: Pierre Gole, Oppenordt, and Boulle to name a few. On the other hand, the Netherlands looked to French designers, such as Daniel Marot, for inspiration. Marot actually finished his career in The Hague, where he emigrated like many other French Huguenots after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

| A sensation in this spring‘s old master prints auction at Koller is a Gothic color woodblock print from circa 1420, “The Death of the Virgin” (lot 3564), recently discovered in a Swiss collection. Only two copies of this print were known until now: a slightly more trimmed version in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, and a fragment in the Tiroler Landesmusem Ferdiandeum in Innsbruck. The beautifully conserved sheet at Koller is among the rarest examples of prints in the International Gothic style. Also featured in this auction is a richly inked example of Albrecht Dürer‘s “Nemesis oder Das grosse Glück” (The Great Fortune) from circa 1501 (lot 3539). Among the old master drawings in Koller‘s March auctions are a pen and ink study from the school of Rembrandt (lot 3455) from circa 1650-52, and two 18th-century sanguine drawings of ancient ruins by Hubert Robert (lots 3433 and 3455). | ||||||||||||

One of the most important private collections of 18th century Zurich porcelain and silver ever to come to auction will be presented at Koller Zurich on 22 March 2010. René Felber, a doctor, and his wife Friederike, an art historian, were fascinated with the history of the Zurich porcelain manufactory, and for over 60 years collected Zurich porcelain works, interspersed with pieces from Zurich silversmiths. Numerous publications and exhibitions were either inspired or realized by the couple during this period. No Zurich collection of this importance has been auctioned since the 1970s, when the celebrated and often-cited Paul Schnyder von Wartensee collection, as well as that of Alfred Schwarzenbach came to the auction block. The Felber collection gives a nearly complete picture of the depth and diversity of the figures produced by this extraordinary manufactory in its brief, 30-year existence, and the adjective “rare” can be genuinely applied to almost every piece. Two particularly amusing Türkengruppen depicting the liberation of beautiful female slaves belong to a 5-piece set representing “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” (“The Abduction of the Harem”). A pair of extremely rare dancers in soft-paste porcelain from the circle of the Commedia dell'arte, as well as a pair of groups depicting allegories of Europe and Asia embody the charming and unique style of this manufactory. The collection also features a series of figural groups created by the artist Valentin Sonnenschein, especially known for the figures he made for the Einsiedler service. Particularly noteworthy is a rare object from his circle, representing a monkey riding on the back of a dog. A large series of Ausruferfiguren (figurines of street merchants) and exquisite genre figures such as a maid serving coffee combine to present an accurate portrayal of daily life in 18th-century Zurich. The couple's passion for hunting did not fail to leave its mark on their collection. Along with porcelain figures on this subject, the Felbers assembled an important collection of silver hunting accessories, such as hunting wine tasters by Zurich as well as by Augsburg silversmiths. For the refined hunter on the move, a complete 18th-century traveling set in its original leather case is a must, including finely chased goblets, eggcups and silverware.
