| A newly rediscovered still life by 17th-century Dutch artist Abraham Mignon (lot 3033) tripled its pre-sale estimate at Koller's spring Old Master Paintings auction, selling for CHF 432 000 / EUR 311 000. The painting, a still life with fruit and flowers dating from the end of Mignon's short life, circa 1675, was previously known to experts only through a black-and-white photo from the 1930s. Its freshness to the market as well as its jewel-like rendering of detail inspired the two final bidders to raise the ante by an additional hundred thousand francs.
Another painting that incited spirited bidding was a 17th-century allegory by the northern Italian artist Pietro Belotti, “The Fate Lachesis” (lot 3043). Depicting the Fate as an old woman, Belotti simultaneously realized a striking portrait marked by the personality of the sitter, as well as a somewhat troubling depiction of the Fate who, according to Greek and Roman mythology, decided shortly after a baby's birth how long its lifespan would be. The CHF 204 000 / EUR 147 000 realized for this work set a new auction record for the artist. Other highlights of the Old Masters auction were a 16th-century Flemish landscape with the conversion of St. Hubert (lot 3018) that fetched CHF 180 000 / EUR 130 000, a scene by the workshop of Lucas Cranach the younger with the amusing title “Unequal Love” (lot 3022) that more than tripled its estimate to sell for CHF 103 200 / EUR 74 300, and a “Concert of Birds” (lot 3031), one of the most popular motifs by the workshop of Jan Breughel the younger. |
