Two important sculptures dominate the Asian Art auction at Koller this spring: a large sandstone Khmer Buddha Muchalinda from the 12th/13th century (lot 321) from a private Swiss collection practically exudes an aura of peace and contentment. A graceful standing bronze figure of Parvati (lot 339) from Vijyanagar in southern India dates from the 15th century. Among the Chinese bronzes, a “ding” covered recipient from the eastern Zhou Dynasty (6th/5th century B.C.) is remarkable for its state of conservation and its beautiful blue-green patina (lot 147). Among the Sino-tibetan figures, a gilt bronze Tathagata Amithaba is particularly charming (lot 111), with lovingly chased and engraved details such as the lotus flowers to its flowing robes. A large series of interior-painted snuff bottles will be offered this time, coming primarily from the collection of René Naville, Swiss ambassador to Beijing from 1959 to 1962.
