RICCI, ARTURO

1854 Florence 1919

The Florentine-born painter Arturo Ricci received his early training in the studio of the genre and costume painter Tito Conti (1842–1924), whose works were known above all for their precise execution and powerful colours. Ricci, however, was able to surpass his master in many respects. Figurative motifs, genre scenes and depictions of family life are predominant in Ricci's oeuvre, and he established himself as one of Europe's most important artists within the field of historical genre painting. With his paintings, especially those with eighteenth-century subjects, Ricci struck a chord with the times. His works held an enormous appeal to collectors throughout Europe and the United States, who could escape the harsh realities of the Industrial Revolution through his paintings and look back on a golden age of elegance and sophistication.
