ARMAND GUILLAUMIN

(Paris 1841–1927 Orly)
Woman knitting in a flower garden. 1888.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated lower left: Guillaumin 88.
72 × 92 cm.

Provenance:
- Auction Christie's, London, March 1992.
- Swiss private collection, probably acquired in the above-mentioned auction.

The year 1888, in which this work was painted, was one of the most important in Armand Guillaumin's life. His daughter Madeleine Julie was born that fall. The family increasingly played a central role in his life, which not only shaped his development as an artist, but is also always reflected in his works. Guillaumin is thus one of those Impressionist artists who succeeded in going beyond the perception and capturing of a particular mood. He developed a feeling for the personality of the depicted figure, surrounded by gardens in bloom, in his paintings. It seems likely that the artist paid special attention to the event and thus created a work with Madame Guillaumin, his wife, in joyful anticipation of her next child, in a garden setting.
