AN IMPRESSIVE FIGURE OF A MOTHER WITH CHILD BY UDAGAWA KAZUO (active 1900-1910).
Japan, late Meiji period, height 64 cm (figure).
Dark patinated bronze. A mother sitting on a wood bench breast-feeding while eating, worked in the naturalistic style of the Tokyo school. Chopsticks lost. Marked Udagawa Kazuo sei. (3)
Provenance: Old private collection from the French part of Switzerland.
A similar work is located in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession no. EA1989.14.
