Vallotton wanted to create landscapes that were free from any literal fidelity to nature, reconstructed solely from the feelings they had evoked in him, with a few suggestive lines and selected details. This quest for a spiritually condensed, evocative landscape finds its convincing pictorial form in ‘Vue d'Honfleur, le soir’. With subtle gradations of grey, blue and green tones, enlivened by pink and orange reflections, a quiet grandeur emerges in which compositional rigour and poetic sensibility are perfectly united.
