The work depicts an idyllic riverside scene on the Oise, northwest of Paris. To the left of the path, separated by a wooden fence, stand plain, orderly houses with a few trees at the front, which lead the eye into the distance. The river reflects the bright sky with its soft clouds. The atmosphere is suffused with light, quiet and peace—a feature that particularly characterizes Loiseau's painting style.
Loiseau prefers to remain in the countryside and enjoys working en plein air. He spends long days in front of the easel, which he often sets up on the banks of the Oise, and paints directly from the subject. The inhabitants of Pontoise affectionately call him the "painter of the seasons," because he captures the same views at different times of year or at different times of day for months, with unwavering dedication.
