Gemeinsam mit Asger Jorn, Constant, Corneille u.a. gehört Karel Appel zu den Begründern der Gruppe COBRA, die offziell von 1948-1951 existiert hat. Auch wenn das vorliegende kleinformatige Werk lange nach der COBRA-Zeit entstanden ist, erkennt man doch sofort den Einfluss dieser prägenden Zeit: die expressive und pastose Malweise, die Kombination von abstrakten und gleichzeitig figurativen Formen und Farben, die volkstümlich und kindlich-naiv andeutenden Techniken. Wie wichtig aber über das künstlerische hinaus auch die gesellschaftlich-politische Gedankenwelt der Künstlergruppe COBRA gewesen ist, erklärt Appel 1977 selbst: "If I asked a bird why it has wings, why it sings its head off, it'd say : I haven't the faintest idea." Creation comes before explanation. [...] But today, when I stand back and take a look at my work, it seems to me that what I've been doing is to shout out my love of freedom. To say "no" to the established order, that's the function of art. I think that the revolt of May 1968, twenty years after my own beginnings, showed how right I was. There is a new mentality in the air, something more spontaneous and at the same time more critical. The world was changing. Our group, Cobra, was just a bit before its time!
