FRANKREICH -

Baldus, Édouard Denis (1812-1889).
Ansicht von Avignon. Original-Photographie.
Albuminierter Salzpapier-Abzug. Vintage. Wohl 1856 (vor 1859). Mont. auf Trägerkarton.
33,5 x 44,5 cm.
Unten rechts mit Stempel-Signatur "E. Baldus".

"Torrential rains in mid- and late May 1856 caused rivers to swell and low-lying areas to flood throughout France.... So great was the desctruction that Napoléon III departed Paris in the middle of preparations for the baptism of the prince imperial in order to visit the scene in person... By the time Baldus arrived in the Rhone Valley the river had largely subsided, leaving the photographer to record not the torrent itself but rather the ruinous shells of buildings in Lyon and the cerily serene landscape around Avignon." (M. Daniel, The Photographs of Édouard Baldus, New York, 1994, S. 66-70). - Etwas aufgehellt, leicht angestaubt. Trägerkarton mit kl. Randläsuren, Fehlstellen und Randeinrissen, Stock- u. Fingerflecken sowie etwas angestaubt. Ingesamt in guter Erhaltung.
