LIN FENGMIAN (1900-1991).

Zwei Tänzerinnen, 1950er Jahre. 66x64cm.

Bought by the step father of the present owner in Hongkong in 1956. Lin Fengmian, today recognized as one of the fathers of Chinese modern painting, was living in Shanghai at the time and could hardly support his family with his paintings. His wife Alice Vattant together with their daughter and son-in-law finally obtained a Brazilian visum to leave China which was shutting itself off from the world, so Lin was in need of money and sold some paintings in Hongkong. The present owner married in 1957 and was allowed to choose one of Lin's paintings as a wedding present from her step-father. This work thus represents both the pleasure of a young bride, and an artist's means to provide a better life for his family.
