Mit doppelblattgr. gest. Titelblatt, 1 gest. Frontispiz, 2 Portraits, 78 (davon 54 doppelblattgr. und 3 gefalt.) Kupferstichkarten, 835 (davon 76 doppelblattgr., 24 gefalt., 39 kol.) Kupfertafeln von Bouquet, Letellier nach Redouté und 10 (davon 5 gefalt.) Tabellen.

Rückentiteln, Band- und Jahreszahl, Innen-, Steh- und Aussenkantenverg., Goldschnitt (Rücken unter Verwendung der alten Decken restauriert, Innengelenke verstärkt; leicht berieben, Deckel teils etwas beschabt, Ecken etwas bestossen).

Ausg.). - Erste Ausgabe. - Das monumentale Werk von Dominique Vivant Denon „Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, pendant les campagnes du général Bonaparte“, Paris, 1802, war der Auftakt zu dem Unternehmen der französischen „Commission de l‘Égypte“. Unter der Leitung des Ägyptologen Edmé François Jomard (1777-1862) wurde die „Déscription de l‘Égypte“ erstmals 1809-1813 herausgegeben: „Normally this works consists of 8 folio vols. in 9 (the extra volume being vol 2 part 2 of the ‚Etat Moderne‘), 10 volumes of large folio plates and 3 volumes of elephant folio plates.“ (Atabey). Wie bei allen bisher bekannten Exemplaren, variieren Bindung und Tafelzahl auch beim Vorliegenden. Unsere Suite umfasst 421 Tafeln Antiquités (Atabey 419), ferner 171 Tafeln Etat Moderne (Atabey 174), sowie 242 Tafeln Histoire Naturelle (Atabey 243), der Atlas umfasst 51 Tafeln (wie bei Atabey). Das prachtvolle Werk lieferte eine Bestandsaufnahme der altägyptischen Denkmäler und die Darstellung des damals zeitgenössischen Ägyptens und diente als kunsthistorisches Inventar, das das Bild Ägyptens in Europa wesentlich erweiterte: „Diese intellektuelle Aufbereitung der während des Feldzuges gesammelten Erkenntnisse übertrifft an Umfang, Informationswert und Qualität der Abbildungen alle bis dahin bekannten Arbeiten im Rahmen der Ägyptenforschung. Die Description de l‘Égypte besteht sowohl aus Tafeln mit objektiver Wiedergabe der Denkmäler als auch aus Abbildungen idealer Rekonstruktionen der Denkmäler in Farbe.“ (Seipel, Wilfried. Ägyptomanie. Wien, 2000. S. 104, Anm. 23). - „A special engraving machine was invented by Conte especially for this work to enhance the quality of the plates; it is itself illustrated in the work. The fact that production took almost twenty years, the work being issued in livraisons, with the subsequent vagaries of binding, means that each copy differs to a certain extent. This is particularly so with reference to the coloured plates. It may have been the case that subscribers were allowed to make their own choice picking plates at random from each section, although the geological plates seem always to be coloured... The impulse which prompted Napoleon to take a scientific commission with him on his expedition to Egypt was probably driven by his desire for glory and his attempts to emulate Alexander the Great, who had also taken scientists and savants with him on his expedition to India. Whatever lay behind the impulse, the results were both tragic and grand: many of the scientists, orientalists and artists Napoleon recruited never returned from Egypt, but the mass of material which they accumulated gave Europe its first great appreciation of both the ancient and modern Egyptian worlds and provided the basis for most of the 19th c. archaeology of Egypt...“ (Atabey). - Durchgehend und meistens in den Rändern etwas stockfleckig, teils ganzseitig gebräunt, nur vereinzelte Tafeln mit kleinen Randeinrissen. - Provenienz: Gest. Exlibris mit Wappen des englischen Herzogs von Northumberland mit Banderole des Hosenbandordens jeweils auf vorderem Spiegel, „A crescent argent within the horns, per pale, sable and gules charged with a double manacle fesseways or“ (Burke & Burke 1884, Art. „Percy“) - Schweizer Privatbesitz seit mehreren Generationen.
