In his simple, pure and almost abstract paintings Djamel Tatah offers a representation of contemporary man, trying to assert his presence in the world. Known for his large format paintings and polyptychs, he paints life-size, full-length portraits, which convey the impression of being suspended in time. He paints people immersed in silence, released, so it seems, from all external parameters. And through his deep colours, light and painting style, the artist seeks to reassess the loneliness and goodness of mankind.
In 1999 and 2000 Djamel Tatah addressed the subject of war in his art. The present work belongs to this group; for him this is about the importance of our attentiveness in the face of others and of society.

Born in 1959, the French-Algerian artist Djamel Tatah studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Étienne between 1981 and 1986. His first solo show took place in 1999 at the Galerie Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert in Paris. Since then his works have been exhibited throughout France and also internationally. The artist lives and works in Provence and teaches at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
