MASTER OF THE BOB JONES ADORATION

(active in Brussels, 16th century)
Triptych with the Adoration of the Kings (centre), the Birth of Christ (inner left panel), and Rest on the Flight to Egypt (inner right panel). Circa 1506.
Oil on canvas, laid on panel.
102.6 x 139.7 cm (open), 102.6 x 68.8 cm (closed).

Provenance:
- Brown University collection, Providence, Rhode Island.
- Since 1971 David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University.
- European private collection.

Having examined the original, Peter van den Brink links this travelling altar with the one in the Bob Jones collection, hitherto attributed to Jan Swart van Groningen (circa 1500-1560) (Inv. No. P.51.1, see Kennedy, Trinita / Nolan, Jone: A Divine Light. Northern Renaissance Paintings from the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery, Nashville 2011, Cat No. 3, pp. 48-49). Dr. John Hand, on the basis of a photograph, sees stylistic parallels with the Mannerism of Antwerp circa 1520-30.
