A SPLENDID PAIR OF YANGZHOU STYLE LACQUER COMPOUND CABINETS.

China, late Ming dynasty, 78.5x42.5, overall height 173 cm.
Black lacquer inlaid with colourful stones and mother-of-pearl depicting a lake-side landscape. Incised bronze fittings.

Provenance: Purchased by Henry Wehrhane in Bejing in 1923, hence by descent. The seller Xu Shoushao declared that the cabinets had been made for emperor Chongzhen and been given to his grandfather Xu Tong (1819-1900) in the third year of Guangxu. He was then an advisor to the emperor. This statement survived in the form of an English translation done by J.C. Fitzhugh at the time (only as a copy).

來源:1923年Henry Wehrhane先生在北京購得。賣家描述,此頂箱櫃是專為崇禎皇帝所製,在光緒三年賜于其祖父徐桐(1819-1900,曾任皇帝上书房老师)。相关档案以J.C. Fitzhugh当年翻译的英文文件留存(仅作为副本)。
