MINAUDIÈRE, BY CARTIER, ca. 1928.

Signed Cartier Made in France, no. 0655, maker's marks, gold marks.
Rectangular gold case with rounded corners, the cover and the base decorated with two panels in "laque burgauté" with japanese scene and landscapes, within a red enamelled border and two diamond-set ornaments of geometric design. Thumb-piece set with diamonds, the sides enhanced with black enamelled ornaments. Inside mirror, powder compartment with cover and lipstick holder. Ca. 6 x 4,2 x 1,8 cm.

The term "laque burgauté" refers to a method using black lacquer with tinted and sometimes engraved mother-of-pearl, and silver and gold foil inlays.
This technique began in China and then spread to Japan.
