VITRINE CABINET

Louis XV style, early 20th century. Signed J. Zwiener (Julius Zwiener, 1867–1922).
Tulipwood, satinwood and cross-grained wood, inlaid with floral vines in latticework. Front with double doors with cut glass. Interior lined with red velour, the back with a mirror. "Vert de mer" marble top. Fine chiseled bronze mounts, and paw sabots. 1 key.
108 x 47 x 152 cm.

Signs of use, losses and missing parts in the marquetry. Somewhat faded.

Julius Zwiener (born 1867) learned his craft, like François Linke, in the Paris workshop of his elder brother Emmanuel Zwiener. At the suggestion of Emperor Wilhelm II, Julius Zwiener came to Berlin in 1894, where he produced commissioned works for the Emperor's rooms in the Berlin Palace. Among them was an identical model to the display cabinet offered here, made for the audience chamber of the palace. See Jörg Meiner: Berliner Belle Epoque, Der Ebenist Julius Zwiener und die Kunstmöbel für den Hof Kaiser Wilhelms II, Berlin 2014, pp. 76-78.
