A HUNTING SNUFF BOX

Meissen, 2nd half of the 18th century.
Oval, moulded in the form of a slain stag with its head tilted back, on a grass base. The cover painted with “manierblumen” bouquets, the interior of the cover painted with a still-life with overturned basket of flowers. In gilt copper mount with rocaille decoration.
9 x 8 cm.

Flat chip on one ear.


For a comparable example of a stag snuff box from another factory, Ludwigsburg, s. Beaucamp-Markowsky, Porzellandosen des 18. Jh., 1985, p. 356 and cat. no. 307 (Metropolitan Museum inv. no. 1982.60.364).
