A RARE MODEL OF A CAT

Meissen, model probably c. 1736-38 by J. J. Kändler.
In a crouching pose with a hissing expression. The coat with patches in tones of brown with iron red markings on the mouth and snout and yellow eyes. Underglaze blue sword mark on the underside.
L 10 cm.

Ears minimally chipped.

Kändler's work records listed various cat models in June and September of 1736 and October of 1739 (Pietsch 2002, S. 41). To compare other earlier models, see C. Albiker, Meissener Porzellantiere, 1935, no. 144 and M. Kunze-Köllensperger, Sammlung Guttmann, 1999, p. 69 cat. no.77, 78.
