SPACE SHUTTLE 61 MISSION

Nasa code STS061-105-026
Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper
20 x 25 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection

Space Shuttle Mission 61 was the first repair mission of the Hubble Space Telescope, which lasted from December 2 to 13, 1993. The mirror of the telescope, which had been put into orbit three years earlier, was faulty, resulting in blurry images. During this mission, the crew could install the COSTAR system and the WF/PC-II camera, which successfully corrected the main mirror defect. This image shows astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman during the third of five spacewalks. Hoffman's job was to give instructions to Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier while Nicollier operated the shuttle's robot arm.
