A PAIR OF FIREPLACE CHENETS “READING AND WRITING”

Louis XVI style, France, late 19th century. Based on a model by Simon-Louis Boizot (1743–1809).
Gilt bronze, designed as a reading lady in antique robes on an architectural pedestal adorned with garlands and cords, and a writing youth in antique robes. The reader numbered 463.
32.5 × 15 × 36.5 cm.

Gilding partly tarnished and with losses. Scratches. The pedestal of the reader slightly warped.

The reader and writer go back to a model by Simon-Louis Boizot (1743-1809) from 1780, which often appear as counterparts in bronze but also in biscuit porcelain. One such pair in biscuit porcelain can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. nos. 769-1882 and 769A-1882), and further examples can be found in Ottomeyer/Pröschel: Vergoldete Bronzen. Munich 1986, vol. I, p. 294.
