Oktober 1767. "The purpose of this publication was manifold. It provided a clearer, more precise and useful explanation of volcanic activity than ever published before, which underlined Hamilton's own theories about volcanoes being creative forces and enabled him to answer in one publication the lists of questions about volcanoes and rocks he had been receiving from correspondents all over Europe." (Cat. "Vases and Volcanoes" (1996), S. 166). - Die Tafeln in Umrissradierung von gemäldehafter Wirkung und in ausserordentlich farbfrischem, sorgfältigem und kräftigem Kolorit. Englisch-französischer Paralleltext. Wasserzeichen. - Stellenweise minim staub- oder stockfleckig (der Haupttitel etwas stärker). Vorsatz, Titel und Karte mit Montierungsspuren im Bundsteg. - Eine alte hs. Notiz auf dem Vorsatz weist daraufhin, dass das Buch aus dem ehmaligen Besitz Thomas Phillips (1792-1872) und Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen (1829-1872), auch Lord Brabourne, stammt: 'Bought for 1,20 at sale 1 Sir Tho[ma]s Phillips Library at Sotheby's, Aug 6/ 1886) - stonehead copy 3 vols fetched 1.19.9 gosford copy 2.15.0 I sain this is described in Catalogue - 3 vols in one. Best edition complete, with supplement, map - 59 plates, coloured like drawings, slightly waterstained calf. This was a very cheap book Brabourne'.
