"This edition contains considerable additions by the author, while the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets were much enlarged. It was edited by Roger Cotes, whose preface, in which he vigorously attacks the Cartesian philosophy then still in vogue at the universities, and refutes an assertion that Newton's theory of attraction is a causa occulta, is of great historical importance."
