The Sicilian artist Carla Accardi went to the Accademia di Belle Arti in Palermo and Florence, before moving to Rome in 1964. Just a short time after this, in 1947, she formed the group “Forma 1” with other artist friends and followers of abstract art. They signed a Manifesto, proclaiming the union of Futurism and Marxism as a reaction against the fascist regime in Italy and in light of a rising post-war society, which they viewed as progressive, revolutionary and avant-garde.

Carla Accardi quickly developed her own unmistakeable style, but remained true to the basic ideas of the artists group throughout her career. From 1950, she begins to incorporate scriptural and symbolic signs into her abstract pictures. Always one to experiment, from the 1960’s she starts to express her art on used plastic films. The so-called “Sicofoil”, with which she creates colourful tents, are created, and the resulting luminous transparency and flowing movement come to the fore.

The present work “Spazio diviso” is an excellent example of the fact that Carla Accardi concentrates on the connections between the background, the symbols and the resulting spaces on the painting. The signs have no meaning, they are free and unrestricted. However, there is an intense tension between the poetic potential of the illegible, yet harmonious, saturated colours, the touching signs and the empty spaces on the earthy beige canvas. Her dynamic art and her emphasis on the immaterial, simple structures and painting processes, make her a pioneer of the Italian Arte Povera.
