Remigius van Haanen (1812 – 1994) was born in Oosterhout. He was the younger brother of George Gillis and Elisabeth. He was taught not only by his father, but also by Jan van Ravenswaay. Like his brother George Gilis he was drawn eastwards: to Germany and Austria. In the early 1850s he even lived for a short period in St Petersburg. In the end he moved to Vienna. He died in the Austrian Ausseerland (quoted from: Exh. Cat. Ein romantischer Blick – Die Sammlung Rademakers, M-Museum Leuven, Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, B. C. Koekkoek-Haus, Kleve, Brussels 2011, p. 137).
