The drawing was created in 1952, when Giacometti was working on various versions of "Personnages dans une rue" and "Homme et arbre" for the magazine Verve. Issues 27–28 of December 1952 include the lithograph "L'Arbre", which is similar to the present drawing. The Fondation Giacometti owns several drawings from this series.
