SMALL CHINOISERIE PENDULE D'ALCOVE ON BASE WITH BOULLE MARQUETRY

Régence/Louis XV, Paris ca. 1730/40. The dial and the movement signed J Baptiste Baillon. Maître from 1727 onwards.
Curved wooden case, applied with brown dyed tortoiseshell, and opulently inlaid with finely engraved trailing flowers and tendrils. Opulent, chiseled gilt bronze mounts. Door bronzes designed as two putti. White dial (probably replaced at the time). Pierced, chiseled hands. Movement, probably with verge escapement, striking the 3/4-hour on 2 bells, only on demand. The movement, signed and numbered 4152. 1 key. Some losses to the veneer.

Jean Baptiste Baillon (maître from 1727 onwards) was a very important watch-maker during the time of Louis XV and was known for the exceptional quality of his clocks. Unlike many of the guild members of the time, he numbered his works. Baillon obtained many important titles: "Valet de Chambre de la Reine", "Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Reine" and later "Premier Valet de Chambre et Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Dauphine".
