A PUA KUMBU CEREMONIAL CLOTH.

Indonesia, Borneo, Sarawak, Iban, early 20th c. 205 × 95 cm (with fringes).
Warp ikat of handspun cotton in red-brown hues of natural dyes. Dense pattern of croocdiles, anthropomorphic figures and skulls as ritual objects. The edges finished in white, yellow and black stripes. With hanging loops.

Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, acquired in Sarawak ca. 1990 (no documents available).
