HYAKUNIN ISSHU UTAGARUTA (PLAYING CARDS) AND A LACQUER BOX.

Japan, 18th/19th c. Height 15.5 cm (lacquer box) 8.7 × 5.7 cm (cards).
Ink, colours and gold on stiffened paper, the back in silver leaf. In two brocade wrappers a set of 99 figurative reading cards with poems (yomifuda) and 99 grabbing cards (torifuda) with the associated waka poems. Black lacquered box with foliage in gold hiramakie, min. damage. (3)
