Ferdinand Berthoud, son of a "justicier" of Val-de-Travers, learned the art of watchmaking from his brother, Jean Henri (1741-1745), and is considered one of the leading watchmakers in the whole history of clocks. His pendulum clocks, pocket watches, and chronometers are among the finest works of the 18th century.
