Each inscribed and dated centre top: AETATIS SVE 56 AO.1563 (husband). AETATIS SVE 54 AO.1563 (wife).
Each 49 × 34 cm.

Provenance:
– Collection of Count Schaffgotsch.
– Private collection of L., Hitzlisberg, Lucerne.
– Sale Fischer, Lucerne, 30.8.1933, Lot 230.
– Sale Christie's, London, 9.7.1999, Lot 140.
– European collection.

With a dendrochronological analysis by Prof. Dr Peter Klein (19.5.2021), in which the panel of the husband's portrait is dated from 1561 and that of wife from 1549. The date of the paintings as 1563, as noted above, is therefore convincing.

Our thanks to Dr Roland Krischel, for his assistance in cataloguing this pair of works.
