SABRE

Swiss, ca. 1740, Grenadier, Berne.
Brass hilt, lion-head pommel, knuckle guard connected to the guard plate by a reinforcement, further reinforcement, thumb guard. Two-part guard plate, decorated with deer. Quillon extension. Ribbed grip, with fine, original wrapping in brass wire. Single-edged blade, Solingen, back with hollow cuts, etched decoration: Grenadier with grenade, trophy and flowers.
Single-edged blade L 82.8 cm, L 9.4 cm, C: 1.

Provenance:
- Collection M. Sigrist, Lucerne.

The hilt matches that of the later Bernese Ord. 1750, local production. In the early 18th century, Grenadier sabres were often provided with longer and relatively narrow blades. Weapon in very good original condition.
