SABRE

Swiss, ca. 1640/50.
Iron hilt, with simple, engraved punctiform and striped decoration, lion head pommel with large perforation for a cord, flat knuckle guard leading into the quillon, thumb guard, the guard plate screwed into the pommel serves as a fixation for the guard plate. Two-part guard plate, painted sheet metal with punctiform piercing. Ribbed grip. Brass wire wrapping. Single-edged blade, back with hollow cuts, edged decoration featuring Latin sayings, heads slightly rubbed.
Single-edged blade L 86.4 cm, L 103.5 cm.

See: Seitz in "Blankwaffen II", pp.168/170, Ill.180, in which this type of sabre is described as a "Haudegen". Rare weapon from the time of the First War of Villmergen in 1656.
