MIRROR BEARING THE COAT-OF-ARMS OF THE FRENCH ROYAL FAMILY,

Louis XIV/Régence, Paris ca. 1720.
Wood, finely carved with rocailles, scrolled leaves, shells, decorative friezes, latticework and cartouches, and gilt. Frontispiece with the coat-of-arms of the King of France and Navarre, in cartouche below a crown, flanked by 2 wings and framed by the Order of the Holy Spirit and the Order of St. Michael. The upper corners bear the monogram of Louis XIV, in cartouches.

The mirror on offer probably originally served as a frame for a royal portrait. This assumption is based on several comparable mirrors, all of which served as picture frames. These comparable pieces often show a cartouche with the French coat-of-arms, which clearly indicates a royal function. As an example of such a royal frame, a copy from the Collections of Mr. and Mrs. Wrightsman from their residence in Palm Beach can be cited, which was sold at Christie's New York on 24 May 2000, (Lot No. 210).
