A LIMESTONE HEAD OF BODHISATTVA GUANYIN.
Compare two very similar heads: one in the Metropolitan Museum New York and one in the Rietberg Museum Zurich.
Provenance: Collection of Klaus Clausmeyer (1887–1968), a painter and important collector of non-European art. According to his biography he was fighting in Belgium during World War I when a buddha head came rolling to his feet from a collapsing house. He then started collecting buddhist art and later on increasingly tribal art as well. His collection of African and other tribal art is exhibited in the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne since 1972. This work has been in the possession of his daughter until today.
