Lot 1002* - A198 Decorative Arts - Thursday, 30. September 2021, 01.00 PM

AQUAMANILE

Northern Europe, probably Germany, end of the 15th century.
Bronze. Designed as a lion, the curved tail serving as a handle. Small spout tube in the muzzle.
H 10.5 cm.

In part with verdigris. Lid missing. Spout dented.

The curvature of the tail of the aquamanile on offer suggests that it originated in the late 15th century. Cf. Otto v. Falke and Erich Meyer: Bronzegeräte des Mittelalters 1. Romanischer Leuchter und Gefässe. Giessgefässe der Gotik, Berlin 1935, Ills. 484, 492 and 493.
