VISOR OF A BASCINET OR HOUNDSKULL

End of the 14th century.
Iron, in part somewhat corroded, made of one piece, in the course of an old repair, extensions with two hinges were riveted on both sides.
H 15 cm, Weight 0.809 kg.

An exceptionally-rare visor. The houndskull was the characteristic helmet of the Austrians at the Battle of Sempach in 1386, clearly depicted in the Lucerne Picture Chronicle by Diebold Schilling from 1513. The visors, which were initially detachable, were fitted with lateral hinges over the course of time. Cf.
