HEAD PROBABLY OF A QUEEN
Gothic, France, 14th century.
Sandstone, careved full round, verso somewhat flattened. Head, probably of a queen, with parted hair and braided pearl ringlets and a crown-like headdress. On a marble base.
H 32 cm. H with base H 57 cm.
Sooted. Various chips and bumps to the nose and lip. Various losses.
Provenance: Swiss private collection.
With a copy of an expert's opinion by Prof. Guido Devoto (ca. 1992), who locates the stone in the French-Swiss Rhone region and deems an origin of the head from Lyon, Bas Dauphiné, Avignon or Nîmes to be probable.
