Launched in 1976, during the quartz crisis, the Nautilus is the second watch designed by Gerald Genta, after the Royal Oak of 1972. The case shape, very avant-garde for the time, is reminiscent of a porthole, which could explain the name Nautilus. The first reference is the 3700/1, which was produced from 1976 to 1981. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the "Nautilus", Patek Philippe launched the reference 5711 with a slightly larger case in 2006, which was officially discontinued in 2021. The case was enlarged by one millimeter compared to the original reference 3700 and featured a classic blue and black dial. The three-piece case was also slightly thicker (from 7.6 mm for the 3700 to 8.5 mm for the 5711) and featured the caliber 324. Apart from the obvious investment such a model represents, it is also an icon of watchmaking history.
