The faun playing the pan flute is one of the recurring motifs in Franz von Stuck’s work during the 1920s.
This mythological figure symbolizes the untamed, the instinctual, and the seductive. Through the music of the pan flute, the faun conjures a world far removed from civilization and moral conventions—a world of freedom, ecstasy, and sensual pleasure.
Von Stuck thus alludes to the hidden drives within human beings and to a deeper, instinctive nature that exists beneath the surface of bourgeois society.
