A RARE FALCHION WITH WALRUS GRIPS.

Iran, 18th c. Length (blade) 56.5 cm, length (total) 70.5 cm.
Single-edged steel blade with ornamental groove and gold damascened inscriptions. Gilt silver crossguard with floral decoration. Finely carved walrus grips with four cartouches with Persian inscriptions and depicting a lion and a bull on one side and a woman with a sword on the other. Two of the cartouches consisting of the Basmala and the Quran surah 48.1. The other two bearing a dedication of the “most devoted admirer Ahmad al-Husayni” to an Ottoman grand vizier, whose name has been erased. The falchion was most likely presented as a diplomatic gift to an Ottoman pasha.
