LIDDED TANKARD

Germany, probably Erbach ca. 1860/70.
Carved ivory. The walls circumferentially decorated with depictions of the Battle of the Centaurs and Lapiths during the wedding of Pirithous and Hippodamia. The cover decorated with an egg-and-dart frieze and a figure of a young centaur, carved all around. Scrolled handle decorated with acanthus leaves.
H 34 cm.

Small chips. Part of the base of the figure on top is missing.
