JARDINIÈRE

Napoléon III, France, 19th century. Signed F. Barbedienne (Ferdinand Barbedienne, 1810-1892), the nymph reliefs after Jean Goujon (1510-1567).
Gilt and silvered bronze. The front with a central medallion depicting St. Mark's lion flanked by water nymphs and angels riding on mythical animals. Lateral carrying handles designed as cornucopias.
144 x 27 x 54 cm.

Oxidized, signs of use.

The depictions of the nymphs on the front go back to designs by Jean Goujon (1510-1567) for the old "Fontaine des Innocents" from 1549. The stone reliefs, titled "Nymphe et petit génie monté sur un dragon" and "Nymphe et petit génie monté sur un cheval marin", respectively, are originally from the base of the fountain, and are now in the Musée du Louvre. Cf. Florence Rionette. Les bronzes Barbedienne. Paris 2016, p. 232, Ill. 183.
