Lower right on the boat monogrammed and barely legibly dated: VG 16(4)6.

Our thanks to Dr. Christiaan Vogelaar, curator of the Museum De Lakenhal and author of the exhibition catalogue "Jan van Goyen" in the Museum De Laknehal in 1996, who has confirmed the authenticity of this painting on the basis of a photograph.

Das hier angebotene Gemälde entstand im Spätwerk Jan van Goyens und kann kompositorisch wie stilistisch mit der 1655 datierten "Flussmündung (Segelboote in leichter Brise)" in der Kunsthalle Bremen verglichen werden (Inv.-Nr. 376-1918/5). Im Gegensatz zu den farbenreichen Landschaften seines Frühwerks, bevorzugte Jan van Goyen in seinen reifen Werken eine monochrome Palette aus Brauntönen. Das Motiv der Ruine des mittelalterlichen Schlosses Huis te Merwede bei Dordrecht greift Van Goyen in weiteren Gemälden zwischen 1640 und 1656 auf, so beispielsweise in einer 1654 datierten Komposition, welche sich in der Sammlung Graf von Schönborn-Buchheim in Wien befindet (Inv. Nr. G 036, RKD Nr. 251929).
