In February 1951 Christian Schad was commissioned by a clothing manufacturer from Aschaffenburg to portray his son, who was in a wheelchair as a result of polio. The artist's daily visits, which lasted until mid-March, were a tremendous experience for the boy, inducing him to prepare the art supplies for the artist before each session and then watching him intently as he worked.
