Lot 404* - A195AS Asian Art: Japan, India, South-East Asia - Thursday, 03. December 2020, 03.00 PM

A BOTTLE-VASE BY HAMADA SHOJI (1894-1978).

Japan, height 19 cm.
Kaki glaze in nukie style (with wax resist). The base marked "shô" in a rectangular reserve and in rômaji "S. Hamada".

Provenance: Old private collection from Southern Germany.
The vase was displayed at the Rosenthal house in Hamburg and later in Nuremberg during the "Nihon no katachi" exhibition in 1996, together with the works of the other two bid names of the mingei folk art movement Kawai Kanjirô and Yanagi Sôetsu. Persumably for this reason the vase is signed in Latin script (rômaji), which is very unique.
