The present work as well as two further studies, one in a private collection (cat. rais. 1206) and another in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva (cat. rais. 1207), are related to the painting of an older man dressed in black that is located in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (cat. rais. 1207), and which in turn served as a study for the outer left figure in 'The Disappointed Souls' (cat. rais. 1204). The subject is also referenced in the annotation and date on our work: 'Enttäuschte Seele 1891'.
