A PAIR OF CANDELABRAS "AUX SATYRES"

Historicism, the figures by F. LEVILLAIN (Ferdinand Levillain, Paris 1837-1903). Founder's signature: Barbedienne.
Patinated bronze.
H 73 cm.

The pair of satyr figures on offer was modeled after the marble figures by Praxiteles in Ancient Greece, 4th century BC.

F. Levillan was a student of B. Jouffroy (1806-1882). He first exhibited at the "Salon des Artistes Français" in 1861 and did so continuously until 1903. In 1867, on the occasion of the "Exposition Universelle", he earned great admiration for a neo-antique bowl made for the Maison Blos et Drouard. A few years later, he began a collaboration with F. Barbedienne, which was the basis of his immense success. In 1875, he was unanimously awarded the gold medal in the "Exposition Universelle" for his exhibits, stating "... aux formes si variées et si pures ...sont portées au plus haut degré de perfection". Numerous medals followed in the 1870s and 1880s.
