During the Renaissance and the Baroque period, the artists played with the allegorical topos of Time and Truth in many different ways. Accordingly, the work on offer cites the iconography of Chronos as an old, winged man who lifts the Allegory of Truth in the form of a young, female beauty. In terms of meaning, this constellation of figures illustrates the interdependence of Time and Truth. A Latin proverb summarizes this interdependence: "Veritas filia temporis" (Truth (is) the daughter of time), which means something like "With time, the truth comes to light".

A group of figures from the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen may well have served as a free, artistic model for the composition and image-making of the work on offer (Inv.: Nationalmuseet, Frederiksholms Kanal 12, DK-1220 Copenhagen K.). That ivory sculpture, which likewise illustrates the Allegory of Time and Truth, is attributed to the circle of artists around Joachim Henne (active ca. 1663-1707).
