TWO BONE PLAQUES

Northern Italy / Venice, 15th/16th century.
Carved bone, each depicting a man.
H 10.5 cm.
This object contains material of endangered species and is subject to certain trade restrictions. Prospective buyers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import it into another country.


Minimal cracks.

Such bone plaques were applied as decoration on boxes which were made of wood and bone or ivory. Known for this kind of work was the workshop of Embriachi in Venice. Cf. Margaret Gibson: The Liverpool Ivories, Liverpool 1994, p. 106. Boxes bearing such plaques can be found, for example, in the Museo Nazionale di Ravenna: Luciana Martini: Oggetti in Avorio e osso nel Museo Nazionale die Ravenna Sec. XV-XVI, p. 30, Ills. 9 and 10.
